Who is Cesária Évora? Google Doodle pays tribute to singer nicknamed 'Barefoot Diva'

Google has paid tribute to musician Cesária Évora on what would have been her 78th birthday.

The singer, who became famous across the globe for performing with no shoes, was born in Cape Verde on August 27 1941.

Starting her career in the 1960s singing on cruise ships, Évora later went on to earn the nickname the 'Barefoot Diva' for her performances.

Évora's international success finally arrived in 1988 with the release of her first commercial album La Diva Aux Pieds Nus, which she recorded in France.

In 1999 she won the Grand-Cross of the Order of Prince Henry, a Portuguese knighthood to commemorate the quincentenary of the death of the Portuguese prince Henry the Navigator.

Évora's work won her a Grammy in 2003 after she took her African islands music to stages across the world.

In 2012 Cape Verde's third busiest airport was named after her and a statue now stands at the terminal.

Évora died on December 17 2011 in Cape Verde, a year after having a heart attack and subsequent surgery at a hospital in Paris.

The attack came two days after her final concert in Lisbon, on May 8 2010. Her poor health forced Évora to end her musical career in September 2011.
