Who does the best breakfast barm? Greggs, Sayers, Pound Bakery or Eat 4 Less

You can't beat a breakfast barm, whether you're tired, hungover or just wake up feeling more hungry than usual.

But who does the best butty on the high street from these contenders?

We visited Greggs, Sayers, Pound Bakery and Eat 4 Less, to try out their offerings and see how they compared.

The four bakeries have shops across Merseyside and are known for their bargain breakfasts, pastries and sweet treats.

In the morning, many have queues outside the door, as customer wait to get their brekkie fix.

But which one came out top of our taste test? At each place we tried a 'breakfast barm' - or similar equivalent - and a sausage barm.

Here's how they measured up:

Greggs

Bacon and omelette barm

Price: £1.95

Taste: The barm was soft, floury and not too dry. The bacon was crispy without tasting burnt and while the omelette didn't look too appetising, it tasted good and made the barm a bigger, more satisfying breakfast. Good value for the price you pay.

Score: 8/10

Sausage barm

Price: £1.85

Taste: The bun was soft and they were generous with the sauce, which is how I like it. The sausages were just the right size to fit in the barm and it didn't leave a greasy taste. If it had an extra sausage it would be 10/10.

Score: 8/10

Overall score: 16/20

Sayers

Sausage and egg muffin

Sayers sausage and egg muffin (Liverpool Echo)

Price:  £1.60

Taste: I was sorely disappointed with this: not only was the egg watery, but the sausage was tough and barely chewable. The muffin was chewy and would have benefited from some time in a toaster. I wish I'd never eaten this.

Score: 0/10

Sausage barm

Price: £2.60 which includes a hot drink

Taste: There was a generous amount of sauce but also a generous amount of butter too which did not help. The bun was quite thin and meant one of the sausages fell out while eating, however the sausages were not greasy and it did taste fresh.

Score: 7/10

Overall score: 7/20

Pound Bakery

Breakfast wrap

(Liverpool Echo)

Price: £1.50

Taste: Although it doesn't look very good, Pound Bakery's breakfast wrap was a great choice. The wrap was big enough to hold all the fillings, so there were no annoying leaks. It would have been a 10 had the egg not been rubbery.

Score: 7/10

Sausage barm

Pound Bakery sausage barm (Liverpool Echo)

Price: £1

Taste: The bread and sausages were both very fresh and they didn't overdo it with the butter, it was perfect. The only thing that could have made it better would have been adding a hash brown for 50p.

Score: 9/10

Overall score: 16/20

Eat 4 Less

Breakfast barm

Eat 4 Less breakfast barm (Liverpool Echo)

Price: £1.75

Taste:  The amount of food is generous given the price, though the fillings did keep falling out of the barm. The sausages were cooked well, but the bacon and egg were incredibly greasy. The brown sauce was dried into the barm, not giving the fillings a fighting chance.

Score: 4/10

Sausage barm

(Liverpool Echo)

Price: £1.25

Taste:  This was a hearty way to start the day. There was a decent amount of sausage within the barm, even extending to the outer extremity of the bread. The bread was on the dry side, but the splashes of brown sauce gave this breakfast snack a spicy touch.

Score: 6/10

Overall score: 10/20

And the winner is...

On points it's a dead tie between Greggs and Pound Bakery. However the products we taste tested were cheaper from Pound Bakery, so if it's value for money you're after, Pound Bakery is the winner.
