A Mazda CX-5 owner who brought his car in for service was stunned by a dealership’s offer.
TikTok user Riley (@y2knewsfeed) posted a viral clip laying out how much money they wanted for a CX-70, even after factoring in the trade-in value of his CX-5.
Go in for Car Service, Get Sales Offer
Riley begins, "Yo I must be living underneath a rock. Cause when in the world did these vehicles get so God dang expensive?" Riley says he took his car into the dealership’s service center for scheduled maintenance.
Riley the 2022 needed an oil change and tires, which was to take an estimated three hours. Riley says he brought his computer so he could work from the shop. While he waited, he got a text from the sales team asking if he wanted to check out a new car.
The Mazda CX-70 Caught His Eye
Riley said that while he wasn’t actively looking for a new car, a bigger one might better suit his lifestyle. The CX-70 is considerably larger than his CX-5 and sports additional creature comforts like climate controls for rear passengers and has a more capacious cargo area with a third-seating row option. A test drive further convinced Riley that the CX-70 might be a nice fit. He also thought the CX-70’s MSRP was "reasonable."
However, that changed once he sat down with the salesperson and began "talking numbers." He says he informed the sales associate that he was interested in trading in his CX-5 and applying the equity on his crossover to the CX-70. "So he’s running the numbers and all this jazz. He goes and talks to his people, he comes back, and he hands me something," Riley says.
The info sheet Riley was offered contained different monthly payment options for the CX-70. He was stunned.
"Literally y’all not a single one of the payment options per month, regardless of length, of loan term. There was like a 48, a 60, a 72, and an 84 month that he offered. As well as $4,000, $6,000, and $8,000 down. These were all in this table. And not a single one of those options for a monthly payment was under $1,000."

How Much Does a Mazda Cost?
Just crunching the numbers with some of the information that Riley provided, the cost vastly exceeds the CX-70 PHEV’s $54,400 starting price tag. He called the figures "insane," noting that his current CX-5 payments are around $600/month. "That’s kind of at like around where I’m comfortable spending. Like I’m not trying to go crazy all out. I knew that the … vehicle would be more expensive than what I currently have. And I know the economic situation’s not amazing. But I was not expecting the payment to be double and or triple what my current payment is," he says.
Further, he says that one payment plan was $1,800/month. "Who can afford that? Who’s paying that? Who’s paying $1,200 a month on a Mazda?" he asks. "Not me." He concedes that while he loves the car, he doesn’t believe they’re worth that much.
Riley says he ultimately cut the negotiation short as he didn’t want to pay much more than his current payments.
