KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Welington Castillo took a lead off of second base after a one-out double in the fifth inning against the Royals.
The White Sox trailed by two runs and were desperate to get something _ anything _ going.
Royals pitcher Danny Duffy threw a wild pitch, and Castillo took off for third.
The ball bounced back to catcher Meibrys Viloria, who fired to third and threw Castillo out.
Little has gone right recently for the Sox, who have not won since the All-Star break.
The slide continued with Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Royals in front of 14,340 at Kauffman Stadium.
Duffy (4-5) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings as the Sox dropped their sixth consecutive game.
The Sox were without rookie outfielder Eloy Jimenez, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right ulnar nerve bruise.
Jimenez's injury is another hurdle for a the Sox, who fell to eight games under the .500 mark (42-50) for the first time this season.
Jorge Soler and Nicky Lopez had the timely hits for the Royals. Soler had a two-out RBI single in the first. Lopez followed with another run-scoring single.
Ivan Nova walked in a run in the fifth. Soler then drove in two more with another two-out single. Lopez drove in another run with a single to make it 6-0.
Nova (4-9) allowed six runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out two.
Ryan Goins, who joined the Sox from Triple-A Charlotte before the game, hit a two-run homer to right in the sixth.
It was the team's first runs since the eighth inning of Monday's game.
A.J. Reed hit a three-run homer in the ninth, but the Sox couldn't complete the comeback.
They have been outscored 23-7 in the first three games of the series.
