The White Sox doubled down on a pair of monthly honors Wednesday. First baseman José Abreu was named American League Player of the Month, and center fielder Luis Robert was named Rookie of the Month for July/August.
It’s the third career Player of the Month honor for Abreu, while Robert claimed the rookie honor in his first 33 games in the the major leagues.
Abreu won Player and Rookie of the Month honors in April and July of 2014 and was named Rookie of the Month in June 2014.
The Sox also have won two Player of the Week Awards this season: Abreu from August 17-23 and right-hander Lucas Giolito from August 24-30 after he pitched a no-hitter against the Pirates.
Abreu, 33, hit .315/.359/.636 with 12 homers, 10 doubles, 32 RBI and a .996 OPS in 35 games in July and August. He hit safely in 27 games and takes a 15-game hitting streak into the Sox game against the Twins Wednesday night. He slugged 11 homers in August, the second-most in August in club history behind Frank Thomas’ 13 in 2003.
Abreu set club records with six home runs in a three-game weekend series against the Cubs, homering in four consecutive plate appearances over two games.
Robert, 23, batted .298/.348/.612 with 10 homers, eight doubles, 24 RBI, 22 runs scored and four stolen bases while playing superb defense in July and August.
Robert is tied for third among AL position players with a 1.6 fWAR in 2020, and few of his hits have been cheap. He leads the majors with an average exit velocity of 108.9 mph on home runs.
The Sox (22-14) are tied for first place with the Indians in the AL Central.
