White House sheds light on whether US strike hit girls’ school in Iran

The White House has cast doubt on reports suggesting the US may have been behind a strike in Iran that hit an elementary school.

During a press briefing, President Donald Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed claims concerning the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab, which was struck Saturday.

Asked directly whether the US military struck the school, she stated: "Not that we know of," and added that the Pentagon is currently investigating. Leavitt firmly asserted: "The United States of America does not target civilians."

Separately, Leavitt confirmed that the US is not currently considering deploying ground troops to Iran. She also noted that Trump was weighing a US role in Iran after the conflict.

Leavitt added the decision to initiate hostilities Saturday morning was driven by various perceived threats to the US, guided by rare intelligence regarding supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s location.
