With General manager Chris Ballard emphasizing the need for added competition on the roster this offseason, do we see the Indianapolis Colts take a different approach to free agency?
That sentiment from Ballard tells us that should be the case, but ultimately, we will have to wait and see, given his track record and the lack of additions made recently.
However, if the Colts are going to go down that free agency path, one free agent that they should prioritize, says Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports, is safety Tre’von Moehrig.
“In 2024, he recorded a career-high 104 combined tackles and 10 passes defensed to go along with two interceptions and a sack,” wrote Dajani. “An underrated player to watch.”
Moehrig was a second-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 and spent his first four NFL seasons there. He’s been a very sound tackler throughout his career and was one of PFF’s highest-graded run defenders at the safety position in 2024.
In coverage, he held pass catchers to a career low 9.7 yards per catch this past year and has had good ball production with five interceptions the last two seasons and 17 career pass breakups.
Moehrig has played the majority of his career snaps at free safety, but in 2024, did see more snaps in the box. For what it’s worth, Nick Cross was the Colts primary strong safety last season.
Safety, along with the cornerback position, is one of the biggest needs that the Colts have. As Ballard said when discussing the secondary, “we’ve got to get better.”
The Colts pass defense as a whole ranked in the bottom 10 in completion rate, yards per pass attempt, pass deflections, and passer rating.
In addition to needing improved play, the Colts need depth as well at safety, with only Cross, Rodney Thomas, and Marcel Dabo under contract in 2025.
Pro Football Focus projects that Moehrig will earn a four-year – $60 million deal in free agency. The Colts currently have $28-plus million in available cap space, although they have the ability to create more room as needed.
