Where is Euro 2020 being hosted, why is it in 11 cities and the teams in each group

Euro 2020 kicks off this week as Turkey take on Italy in the first fixture of the tournament out in Rome on Friday night.

The tournament, of course, gets underway a year late owing to the coronavirus pandemic, however excitement has steadily bubbled away in the build-up to this week's curtain-raiser.

Wales open their tournament on Saturday against Switzerland out in Baku as the competition takes in 11 cities from across the continent.

Here are the host venues for the next four weeks of fixtures:

London, England: Wembley Stadium – Final and semi-finals, two round of 16 games and three group games

Saint Petersburg, Russia: Saint Petersburg Stadium – Six group games and one quarter-final

Baku, Azerbaijan: Baku Olympic Stadium – Three group games, one quarter-final

Munich, Germany: Football Arena Munich – Three group games, one quarter-final

Rome, Italy: Olimpico in Rome – Three group games, one quarter-final

Amsterdam, Netherlands: Johan Cruijff ArenA – Three group games, one round of 16 game

Bucharest, Romania: National Arena Bucharest – Three group games, one round of 16 game

Budapest, Hungary: Puskás Aréna – Three group games, one round of 16 game

Copenhagen, Denmark: Parken Stadium – Three group games, one round of 16 game

Glasgow, Scotland: Hampden Park – Three group games, one round of 16 game

Seville, Spain: Stadium La Cartuja Sevilla – Three group games, one round of 16 game

The tournament is being hosted in 11 different cities to celebrate the 60th birthday of the competition, which was due to be last year.

Michel Platini thought the idea up back in 2012, labelling it a "romantic" one-off event which would both celebrate a pan-continental tournament while not placing the sometimes onerous burden on just one country to host it.

The tournament is made up of six groups of four teams, as follows:

Group A : Turkey, Italy, Wales, Switzerland

Group B : Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Russia

Group C : Netherlands, Ukraine, Austria, North Macedonia

Group D : England, Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic

Group E : Spain, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia

Group F : Hungary, Portugal, France, Germany
