When to expect Omicron restrictions update after Boris Johnson's Christmas and New Year warnings

After a largely restriction-free Christmas and New Year for people in England, many of us are wondering whether new rules could come into force in early 2022.

So far, there has been no formal indication that there will be any kind of announcement or press briefing regarding the increase in covid infections over the festive period.

But, in the past, many announcements have come quickly and with little notice and there have been some reports that the PM is considering the reintroduction of "step two", which would bring rules on indoor mixing.

On December 27 the government confirmed there would be no additional measures imposed before the New Year.

And writing in the Daily Mail on January 1, Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: "Curbs on our freedom must be an absolute last resort."

The date of Boris Johnson's next announcement has not yet been confirmed.

The number of covid infections per 100,000 in England currently stand at 1,231, in Liverpool they are higher at 1,524 per 100,000 and in Wirral they are higher still at 1,572 per 100,000.

In Sefton, they are slightly lower at 1,481 per 100,000.

Scotland currently has a number of restrictions following the rise in cases. Since December 27 nightclubs have been closed and pubs have had to go back to social distancing and table service.

Since Boxing Day, public events have been limited to 100 standing indoors, 200 seated indoors and 500 outside.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she expects the restrictions to be in place until January 17.

The Prime Minister set the target of offering all eligible adults the chance to get their booster jabs by the end of January, but following the emergence of Omicron he brought forward the deadline to new year.

Around 132 million coronavirus jabs were given last year amid the largest vaccine campaign in British history.

More than 90% of people in the UK over the age of 12 have now had their first dose of a Covid-19 jab and 82.4% have had their second.

The emergence of the Omicron variant triggered an acceleration of the rollout over the festive season, and more than 1.6 million people received their booster dose in the final week of 2021.

This brought the total UK number of boosted adults to 34 million, including three in four eligible adults in England.

Sajid Javid thanked NHS staff and tens of thousands of volunteers for the success of the rollout since December 2020, and urged more people to get their booster in the new year.

He said: "The Covid-19 pandemic has been one of the biggest challenges our health service has ever faced and our historic vaccination programme has been vital in helping us step up to meet this challenge."

Mr Javid added that "132 million vaccinations in a single year is astounding and a true reflection of the fantastic work of our NHS and its volunteers", and said: "I want to thank each and every one of them.

"But we need to make sure people continue to come forward for their life-saving jab.

"As we go into the New Year, make sure you 'Get Boosted Now' to kick off 2022 with the best possible protection from Omicron."
