When thunderstorms are expected to hit Newcastle and around the North East

The dry spell in England is set to be followed by thunderstorms and wet weather on Monday and Tuesday.

The Met Office has issued a series of thunderstorm warnings in the UK, starting with Northern Ireland and Scotland on Sunday, and then expanding into England and Wales on Monday and Tuesday

"While some places stay dry, thunderstorms are likely to develop during Monday, bringing locally heavy rain and possible disruption," the Met Office warning for Monday states. Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, Stockton and Sunderland are all subject to the warning, as is much of England.

There are also chances of flash flooding and power cuts, the Met Office warns.

When will the thunderstorms hit Newcastle and the North East?

The thunderstorm warning covering the North East kicks in at 10am on Monday August 15 and lasts until 11.59pm on Tuesday August 16.

Monday is expected to be drier than Tuesday in the North East, but thunder looks more likely on Monday, while Tuesday is expected to be wetter.

The forecast warns of thunder in Newcastle at 3pm and 6pm on Monday. It does not look like the thundery spells will last for long, with the chance of rain dropping from 50% at 3pm down to 10% at 5pm. It rises to 60% at 6pm - when thunder is forecast but drops back to 10% at 7pm.

Rain is forecast for the early hours of Tuesday morning in Newcastle, before subsiding. But more wet spells are forecast from around midday on Tuesday, until the end of the day.

Further inland, in Hexham, Northumberland, thunder is forecast for 6pm and 11pm on Monday, with rainy spells following throughout Tuesday.

Durham is expected to be mostly dry on Monday, although a downpour is expected at around 7pm. Tuesday is expected to be wet from around midday onwards.

Thunderstorms can be difficult to accurately forecast, so downpours could be localised. Some parts of the region may avoid thunder at all.
