When multi million pound land purchase of Leeds United's new training ground could happen

New details have emerged about the planned sale of land which would allow Leeds United to build a state-of-the-art training ground just a stone's throw from Elland Road.

The club overcame the first hurdle in September 2019, when in Holbeck.

The move, which is expected to cost at least £25 million in total, would provide the Whites with a world class training facility and academy.

Crucially, it would be far easier to get to for the majority of Leeds academy hopefuls, who currently have to travel up to 20 miles to Thorp Arch.

New documents have now revealed when the move might go ahead.

The council has published information on the sale of dozens of assets across the city - including the former Matthew Murray High School - in a bid to raise £95 million.

The Holbeck site is listed for sale in the 2021/22 financial year, which means the club could complete their purchase within the next two-and-a-half years.

However, this would simply be the start of a lengthy process to actually build the new training ground in the years to follow.

If Leeds decide to go ahead with the move, they are likely to be given a five-year lease to begin work on the training ground. Working within this timeframe, the club would have until 2026 at the latest to get spades in the ground.

The club's current lease at Thorp Arch doesn't expire until 2027 though, so it is unlikely that any transition will be made before then.

Speaking about the move, Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear said last year: "The announcement is an exciting one for Leeds United which will hopefully enable us to build a world class facility, aimed at creating a talent development pathway for young people who live in the inner city.

"We believe we can create something that will benefit the entire local community.

"The academy would move to the city centre and we could create a talent development pathway for inner-city youth."
