When is the next bank holiday in 2022 and what about Ireland's Covid bonus holiday?

By Thomas Telford

Many people may be wondering when is the next bank holiday now that the Christmas and New Years period is behind us.

There are currently nine confirmed bank holidays for 2022 in Ireland but that may change in the weeks ahead.

A new bank holiday could added to the list this year as the Government have promised a 'Covid bonus holiday'.

Currently, Ireland has one of the fewest bank holidays in Europe with an EU average of 12, compared to Ireland's nine.

That looks set to increase to 10 in 2022 with a temporary bank holiday believed to be planned for March 18 before a permanent date is chosen in 2023.

That permanent date for a new bank holiday in 2023 is rumoured to be February 1 which is St Brigid's Day.

Former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan, has said that St Brigid's Day would be his preference rather than tying the new holiday to an American day.

"Rather than rush into having a public holiday before Christmas, or simply importing another American tradition or inventing a new pre-Christmas shop-and-spend frenzy, I suggest making February 1, Brigid's Day, a new annual public holiday," he said.

Below you'll find every confirmed bank holiday in Ireland as well as the temporary date for a possible one-off holiday for 2022.
