When huge names like Christina Aguilera and Annie Lennox filmed Top Of The Pops on location in Swansea

Picture this, if you will - Top Of The Pops was homeless, well for a few weeks back in the autumn of 1999 when the show was inbetween studios and the then producer came up with the ingenious idea of taking the show to the people.

So a roadshow was set up with appearances all over the UK at Edinburgh, Brighton, Nottingham, Sheffield, Liverpool, Newcastle, Birmingham and, finally, Swansea.

The south Wales date, which aired on October 15, 1999, was held at the Time nightclub, which used to be on The Kingsway and, depending on your age, you might have fond memories of one or more of its previous or later incarnations, starting with Ritzy in the 1990s, and followed by Icon and Envy.

The show was presented by Jayne Middlemiss and featured performances from the following artists:

The song that week was just outside the top 10 at number 11.

Macy Gray

American R&B singing sensation Macy Gray performed her international hit, I Try, which was sitting pretty at number 10.

During this time, Gray was riding the wave of press and performing all over the world.

You may be forgiven if you don't know the name Ann Lee but many will remember the song she performed in Swansea - the Eurodance hit, 2 Times. It got as far as number 2 in the UK but topped the Belgian chart and was also a top 10 smash in a number of other countries around the world.

James

Indie rock sensations James performed their hit, Just Like Fred Astaire, which was the second single taken from their Millionaires album.

The song would reach number 17 in the charts.

Christina Aguilera

1999 was a definitive year in pop music, with Christina's debut single spending two weeks at number 1.

The singer first featured on US TV show, The Mickey Mouse Club, just like her pop peers Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, along with actors Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell. Aguilera is still making music and acting to this day.
