When do you give Easter eggs and why do we eat hot cross buns?

Easter 2019 has officially arrived and with spring temperatures beginning to soar, it looks set to be a lovely weekend of celebration.

But what also comes with Easter?

Chocolate eggs and hot cross buns. Lots of them.

The shops have been full of the traditional Easter treats for months so we don't blame you if you have already tucked into an egg or two and scoffed hot cross buns for breakfast.

Although there are no 'rules', there are some traditions that come with the annual festivities.

First, when should we actually give Easter eggs?

Like mentioned above, there are no rules or set time when it comes to the giving of the chocolate treats, whether it's a humble classic or an egg-travagant (sorry) masterpiece.

However, many people will choose Easter Sunday as it is the main day of the celebrations as it when Christians believe that the Son of God was resurrected on this day after Christ was crucified on Good Friday.

And Sunday is often chosen as a good day for an Easter egg hunt before tucking into a delicious dinner.

So what about the hot cross buns?

This little doughy treat is traditionally eaten on Good Friday with the design of the spiced, sweet bun marked with a cross to represent the crucifixion of Jesus.

It is also suggested that they are eaten to mark the end of Lent as they contain the dairy products that were traditionally forbidden during the Christian period of fasting.

This year, the Christian festival falls slightly later with Good Friday on April 19 up until Easter Monday on April 22.
