When do the clocks go back in October? Mark this date in your diary

The nights are getting darker, the days shorter and winter is hurtling fast towards us.

Summer is a distant memory and with the clocks soon to change light evenings will be a thing of the past.

It is the time of year when we all change our clocks back to signal the beginning of winter, and with it chilly nights and dark mornings.

Clocks will go back at 2am on Sunday, October 27 - the last Sunday in October.

We will get an extra hour in bed, which is a bonus, so we can all enjoy a lie in.

Most smartphones will automatically update but if you have a clock at home or in the office you will have to do this manually.

The moving of the clocks was first introduced in World War One, to save coal usage. Germany and Austria adopted it first.

It was invented by George Vincent Hudson, a New Zealand entomologist in 1895, while British businessman William Willett is also credited with the idea as a way of getting up earlier and so having more daylight hours after work.

While the UK has always had daylight savings time since it was first introduced, it came into widespread use across the world during the 1970s because of the energy crisis.

So all you have to remember is to set your clocks back an hour when you go to bed on Saturday, October 26 as the time will jump back to 1am at 2am on Sunday, October 27.
