When do polling stations close on Merseyside and when can we expect results?

Voters up and down the country are heading to the polls today for this year’s local elections.

With errands to run, kids to take to school and jobs to go to, it can be a busy day. But don’t worry, you should have plenty of time to preform your civic duty, as polling stations are open all day long.

Your local council will have sent you a polling card at some point before the election which will tell you where to vote. Don’t worry if you don’t have it, you can still vote even if you have lost it.

Having opened at 7am, you have 13 hours to vote, with the polls open until 10pm (exactly).

After this, all ballots are taken to their respective counting stations.

The majority of councils will count overnight, with early signs of how the election has gone for the main parties should emerge within hours.

A handful of councils - including Knowsley - are waiting to declare results until Friday daytime.
