When Cody Gakpo can make his Liverpool debut after £37m transfer announced

Cody Gakpo is officially a Liverpool player and now the question is: When could he make his debut for the club?

Liverpool are in the midst of a hectic Christmas period that started with a 3-1 win at Aston Villa on Boxing Day, which was given to them by goals from Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Stefan Bajcetic, and will continue on Friday (December 30) when they welcome Leicester City to Anfield (8pm kick-off).

The Foxes clash will come too soon for Gakpo as he will not officially become a Reds player until the transfer window opens on January 1.

The first match Jurgen Klopp's side play after that is away to Brentford on Monday, January 2 (5.30pm kick-off). However, the Holland international, signed for an initial £37m from PSV Eindhoven, may not be able to play in that game either.

Gakpo's application for a UK work permit will be not be submitted until the Premier League transfer window opens on New Year's Day and, The Athletic report, "another complication is that the Dutch transfer window does not start until Tuesday" (January 3). That means the 23-year-old "might need special dispensation to play against Brentford".

If that proves to be the case, Gakpo's first appearance for Liverpool could well be in the the FA Cup when they begin the defence of the trophy they won last season with a third-round tie at home to Wolves on Saturday, January 7 (8pm kick-off).

Gakpo's Netherlands international team-mate Virgil van Dijk also made his debut for the club in a FA Cup third-round clash back in January 2018 with the defender memorably scoring the winner in a 2-1 home victory over Merseyside rivals Everton.

And, last season, the FA Cup third round also marked the start of Luis Diaz's Reds career with the winger producing an electrifying performance off the bench in a 4-1 home win over Cardiff City.

Provided he does not play at Brentford, Gakpo's first appearance for Liverpool in the Premier League could be on January 14 away to Brighton (3pm kick-off).
