When are the European elections results announced, what UK time and why does it take so long?

There are a lot of bizarre things about this European election and the circumstances in which it taking place.

But for some people the strangest moment will be flicking the news on on Thursday night and expecting to see the results come in.

Unlike the rest of the elections we have in the UK, we won't actually know who has won this one for a while.

So when will we know the results? And why does it take so long?

When are the results going to be announced?

Despite the fact voters go to the polls on Thursday, the results wont actually be announced until after 10pm on Sunday .

Legally, the vote can't be announced before then but voters in the North East shouldn't have to wait too long.

Expect a result here before midnight.

Why does it take so long?

Voters in 27 EU countries are taking part in this election , making it the second biggest democratic exercise in the world.

The UK always votes on a Thursday - but that isn't the case across the rest of the contient.

Most voters will head to the polls on Sunday and some on Saturday.

The results are announced together across Europe so we have to wait for a few days for the rest of the continent to catch up.

Where are the results being counted and revealed?

Ballots are counted in the areas they are cast like a council election but the big announcement is the regional total.

For the North East, all the results for the 12 council areas taking part will be compiled and announced in Sunderland .

There'll be an overall result for the region when we find out who will represent the region in the European Parliament and then a breakdown of how all twelve individual areas - from Northumberland down to Darlington - voted.
