When and where the Red Arrows will be practising above Nottinghamshire today

There will be a chance to spot the Red Arrows in the sky above Nottinghamshire today.

The iconic aerobatic team will be practising formation flying in a wide area around RAF Syerston, near Newark.

According to Military Airshows, the Red Arrows will be flying above Grantham, Newark-on-Trent and up towards Lincoln from approximately 9.05am to 10.05am and also 11.30am to 12.35pm on June 30.

The bright red Hawk T1 aircraft had been grounded for three weeks amid the coronavirus pandemic, but have recently resumed training and took part in a fly-past for Armed Forces Day on June 27.

The website has listed the times and locations which may allow for good viewing, as follows:

The route of the Red Arrows on Tuesday, June 30 (Military-Airshows.co.uk)
  • SCAMPTON AD - 9.15am & 11.45am
  • E OF FISKERTON - 9.17am & 11.47am
  • SW OF BARDNEY - 9.18am & 11.48am
  • W OF NORTHGATE - 9.21am & 11.51am
  • VALE OF BELVOIR - 9.24am & 11.54am
  • W OF BOTTESFORD - 9.25am & 11.55am
  • SYERSTON (DISPLAY) - 9.26am & 11.56am
  • KIRKLINGTON - 9.49am & 12.19pm
  • SCAMPTON AD - 9.51am & 12.21pm

The timings and route may be changed and is entirely dependent on the weather conditions at the time.

RAF Syerston is home to a flying training school and is home to the headquarters and RAF central gliding school to train up gliding squadrons.

The military airfield in the small county parish of Flintham was initially built as part of the bomber expansion in the 1930s, and would eventually see the presence of the Lancaster bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes during the Second World War.

In 1958, a prototype Avro Vulcan aircraft crashed during a display at Syerston, killing all crew members and three more on the ground.

It became No.2 Flying School in 1955, which remains to this day.

The Met Office says there will be cloud cover over the county today, but no rain and some sunny spells at 12pm.

Visibility will be 'very good' throughout the morning.
