When and where Scotland could see snow next week as temperatures drop across country

We are definitely starting to feel a winter chill around Scotland as we make our way through October.

Temperatures in northern parts of the country dropped to near freezing last night, according to BBC News with some frost in the mornings over the weekend.

And we also may see some snow fall as we enter next week.

Forecasters are predicting that the white stuff will arrive pretty early this year as Scotland could be hit by a 'rare' snow storm in October.

Former BBC weatherman and meteorologist for Weathertranding, John Hammond, told the Sun: "There is a modest warming taking place in the stratosphere, which will serve to weaken the Polar Vortex and knock it off-kilter over the next week or two."

He added: "After a very mild few days, much colder air will arrive from the north later next week, which may bring some snow to the Scottish mountains.

"That cold spell may not last all that long, but frost, and eventually snow, will probably figure more frequently in our forecasts before too long."

According to meteorologists, high intensity winds and severe cold could last until November as the polar vortex goes into reverse.

A polar vortex is a low pressure area - a wide expanse of swirling cold air - parked in polar regions.

During winter, the polar vortex at the North Pole expands, sending cold air southward.

Most of Scotland will see pretty cold temperatures over the weekend.

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are set for highs of just 9C on Saturday with temperatures improving slightly to around 13C on Sunday, according to the Met Office.

Showers are on the way tonight, with rain likely to fall from 4pm this evening.

Met Office forecasters predict Dundee and Aberdeen will see temperature fluctuate between 7C and 12C over the weekend with areas in the Highlands seeing temperatures drop to almost freezing.
