As Christmas rolls around, it’s finally time for the annual tradition of planting yourself firmly in front of the TV to enjoy some classic Christmas films. There is no better film to get you well and truly in the festive spirit than the The Snowman.
The 1982 animated film follows a young boy who, on Christmas Eve, builds a snowman that comes to life. Together, the two friends take an airborne trip to the North Pole to meet Father Christmas.
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without this yuletide classic. At just 26 minutes long, the short film – based on the late Raymond Briggs’ 1978 book of the same name – has become synonymous with Christmas.

It was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 1983. It has become world-renowned for the iconic and angelic song Walking in the Air, performed by 13-year-old choirboy Peter Auty – not Aled Jones as is commonly believed.
When is The Snowman on TV over Christmas?
The Snowman is scheduled for a Christmas morning broadcast on Channel 4. It airs on December 25 at 11.25am and is followed by 2012’s The Snowman and The Snowdog at 11.55am.

Both films are also available to stream on demand throughout the festive season on Channel 4’s streaming service All 4. A documentary exploring the making of The Snowman also airs this Christmas.
The Snowman: The Film That Changed Christmas will explore the challenges involved in bringing The Snowman to life and tackle some common misconceptions about the film, all alongside interviews with it’s creators. The Snowman: The Film That Changed Christmas airs on Saturday, December 17 at 5pm on Channel 4 and will be available to stream on All 4.
