What Wales' draw with USA means and what they now need to qualify for next round of World Cup

Wales began their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw with USA at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.

Tim Weah's tidy first-half finish gave the Americans the lead on the night before Kieffer Moore's introduction at half-time gave Rob Page's men a much-needed injection of quality.

Wales drastically improved and in the 82nd minute, Gareth Bale was felled in the box and their talisman kept his cool to level the scores.

The result leaves Wales in a decent position in the group after the first game. Defeat looked likely at half-time but pulling a result out of the bag despite playing poorly for the majority of the match means their tournament is still very much alive.

England's demolition job of Iran - they dispatched the Middle Eastern side 6-2 earlier on today - has firmly backed up their favourites tag for the group.

Wales face Iran next on Friday in a must-win game for Page's side; England face the USA later on that day, and should Gareth Southgate's men do the business against the Americans it would do Wales a huge favour in the group, should they see off the Iranians in their own tie. That would leave Wales on four points.

England, if they bag six points from six in their opening two games, could then rest players when they face Wales next week; ultimately, this group is still wide open for Cymru.
