What to use Shell Shards for in Hollow Knight: Silksong

As you slay your way through Pharloom in Hollow Knight: Silksong, you'll pick up Shell Shards from the enemies you've felled. They're one of two forms of currency you'll find, and at first, they might seem useless next to the all-important Rosaries.

However, that's not true at all. Shell Shards are incredibly valuable, but Silksong doesn't come out and tell you what they're used for. Once I found out, I immediately wanted to know how I could get more of them. Thankfully, I found that out, too.

What are Shell Shards used for in Hollow Knight: Silksong?

Shell Shards aren't really money, not in the way Rosaries are. You don't use them to unlock benches or buy maps from Shakra. Instead, Shell Shards have two specific uses. The first is to fulfill some quests on Bone Bottom's Wishwall. These quests will ask you to donate a specific amount of Shell Shards, and completing them will make the Pilgrim's ramshackle settlement livelier.

The second use for Shell Shards is maintaining the tools the Forge Daughter makes for you. We already have a great guide on how to find the Forge Daughter, so check it out if you haven't found her yet.

Once you've exchanged a few hundred Rosaries and a few chunks of Craftmetal for tools like the String Shard, you'll notice you can only use them a few times before they run out. That's where Shell Shards come in. Whenever you sit down at a bench, you'll automatically use Shell Shards to "refuel" whatever tool you have equipped.

At the start of your Silksong journey, you'll only be able to hold 400 Shell Shards. If you get invested in using tools, you'll probably end up wanting to hold more. Luckily, there is a way to expand your carrying capacity.

Once you've gotten the Drifting Cloak and beaten the Fourth Chorus in Far Field, ride the updrafts in the central chamber, but hook off to the right about halfway to the top. This will lead you to Pilgrim's Rest, a Pilgrim sanctuary you can unlock for 30 Rosaries. Once you're inside, you can buy the Tool Pouch from Mort for 220 Rosaries. This upgrade lets you carry more tools, and it also expands your Shell Shard carrying capacity. Buy it as soon as you can, though; the fee to unlock Pilgrim's Rest resets every time you leave. Cheapskates.
