What Titans are getting in ex-Bears TE Trevon Wesco

The Tennessee Titans made a pair of moves on Friday, one of which included agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with former Chicago Bears tight end, Trevon Wesco.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Wesco is a solid add for the Titans, a team in need of multiple tight ends beyond budding star, Chigoziem Okonkwo.

While Wesco won’t solve the team’s need for pass-catchers, the former fourth-round pick has proven to be a good blocker during his career, something that could help him land a roster spot.

In an article grading the move, our Shaun Calderon gave the Titans a “B+”. Here’s some of what he had to say:

Wesco isn’t going to provide much in terms of his pass-catching abilities, but you can make a very strong argument that he is a massive upgrade over Swaim in the blocking department.

In order to get even more information on Tennessee’s newest tight end, we sat down with the managing editor of Bears Wire, Alyssa Barbieri, who gave us more details on the 27-year-old.

What are Wesco's strengths?

Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

AB: Wesco was at his best when it came to serving as a blocker in the run game. He actually started the 2022 season as the TE3 but quickly worked his way up the depth chart behind starter Cole Kmet because he was an elite blocker for the Bears’ top-ranked run game, notching an impressive 78.0 blocking grade from Pro Football Focus in 2022. He also brings physicality to the position.

What are Wesco's weaknesses?

Matt Marton-USA TODAY Sports

AB: While Wesco was an effective run blocker, he wasn’t utilized as a pass catcher. Wesco only had two catches for 26 yards in 14 games last season. His most notable moment came after Justin Fields’ insane 61-yard touchdown run against the Dolphins, where Wesco hauled in a catch for a two-point conversion.

What role is Wesco best suited for?

AB: Wesco isn’t going to be a reliable weapon in the passing game, but he’s someone who’s going to help bolster an offense because of his elite blocking ability. For a team like the Titans with Derrick Henry in the backfield, Wesco will be an asset in the ground game. He’s also a solid special teams contributor.
