What time is Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance’s speech? How to watch Covid update

The government’s top scientists will today warn the country is at a “turning point” in its battle against Covid-19 in a televised press conference.

Brits will be warned to prepare for a “very challenging” winter by Chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, and Sir Patrick Vallance, chief scientific adviser, as a second wave of coronavirus cases starts to arrive.

Prof Whitty is expected to say: “The trend in the UK is heading in the wrong direction and we are at a critical point in the pandemic.

“We are looking at the data to see how to manage the spread of the virus ahead of a very challenging winter period.”

When is Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance’s press conference?

The coronavirus update will be at 11am on Monday, and be shown on TV, in the same way the government’s daily briefings were earlier in the year.

People can watch the press conference - in which neither scientist will take any questions - on channels such as BBC  One and Sky News, as well as on the Mirror website and Mirror Politics Facebook page.

Prof Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance will also urge the public to follow the government’s rules as they publish the latest data on the deadly virus.

Where’s Boris Johnson?

Monday’s speech by the government’s scientists will be the first time they’ve given a televised briefing to the country without a politician alongside.

This means Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not be present.

However, he is expected to give a separate TV address later this week.

The timing for this address has not yet been confirmed, but it could be as soon as Tuesday.
