What Tammy Abraham has done to secure Chelsea starting spot amid Werner and Havertz transfers

With all the new summer signings, a place in Chelsea's starting XI was always going to be tough for Tammy Abraham.

The Blues brought in Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz to strengthen their attacking options, meaning Abraham's place in the team was under threat.

The 23-year-old had a decent first season as Chelsea's number nine, netting 15 in the Premier League and three in the Champions League during the 2019/20 campaign.

But with the incoming talent, Abraham guaranteeing a spot in the side is difficult and he has not had a regular spot.

The England international has started just three Premier League matches, with another three appearances off the bench.

However, the striker has started the last two matches, in the 3-0 win over Burnley and the same result against Rennes.

He was given the chance to show what he can do, and he has certainly impressed in both matches as his development is clear to see.

Abraham posted videos at the start of the season with his workout routine, showing that he has seriously bulked up over the summer.

Against Burnley, he showed his physicality to hold up the ball and battle against a tough back line in James Tarkowski and Kevin Long.

On Wednesday night, once against Abraham was somewhat in the wars and up against a tough defensive partnership at the back.

Abraham showed his goalscoring ability with a neat finish to slot home a Reece James cross.

He has certainly given himself the chance to be a regular starter in the side, with the Blues boss impressed with what he has seen so far.

"I'm very happy," Lampard said. "I've had numerous conversations with him. I've a good relationship with him. When we brought in players in attacking areas we brought in players who are versatile in their nature.

"We saw Timo tonight for instance. The quality Tammy can bring to the team are never short on me. I know what he can bring when he's at his best. In his last two games, today and against Burnley, we saw him at his best.

"He got his goal tonight and he deserves it in terms of stretching teams, taking them long, setting off our press, jumping in. Not happy to just jump five yards but get the team up the pitch as the first man off the ball. Those things are very important for me. Sometimes it's about the unseen.

"His goal was the culmination of his performances over the past two matches."
