What should you do if you gas company goes bust?

There are fears that some gas companies are at risk of closure thanks to the ongoing gas price crisis affecting international markets.

The price of wholesale gas has surged by 250 per cent since the beginning of the year and added 70 per cent just since August, according to figures from Oil & Gas UK.

This may result in your own energy supplier effectively going bust and being unable to supply your gas for the future.

If this does happen, don't panic, Ofgem will move you to a new supplier automatically so all you have to do is sit tight.

The energy regulator will take pictures of your meters, and download or print out your bills from the old supplier.

In the case that Ofgem moves you to a supplier or a deal you are not happy with, you can shop around for a new supplier that may have better deals on offer.

If your energy supplier owes you money, your money is contractually protected and you should get it back as soon as possible.

It might take a few weeks for Ofgem to move you to a new supplier, the new supplier will contact you when it is sorted.

The change in supplier should not interfere with your actual energy supply, therefore, you can continue to use your gas and electricity while the change is in process.
