Landart Festival, 15-20 June

Teams from all over the world come to create sculptures and installations using nothing but natural materials found in the area. After a week of creative endeavour, the creations are assessed by a panel of judges and a verdict given at a closing ceremony with folk music.

Jungfrau Marathon, 5 September

You'll never run in more beautiful surroundings than the Alpine course of this 26-mile run, with a vertical ascent of 1,839 metres. Look down on the emerald waters of Lake Brienz, while being dwarfed by the towering rock walls of the Lauterbrunnen valley, cooled by the air among the stone pines beneath Wengernalp and admiring the eternal ice of the majestic Silberhorn mountain.

Spring Alpine Festival, 29 June

This annual festival celebrates local traditions and folklore, with dances in national costume, folk songs, yodelling, alphorn trios, flag waving, and whip crackers who could teach Indiana Jones a thing or two.

Inferno Triathlon, 21-22 August

Think you're fit? Try one of the toughest triathlons in the world with a vertical ascent of 5,500m with the unrivalled backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. There are trophies for teams as well as individuals. There is also a half-marathon with a 2,000-metre climb. These are races only for well-trained and experienced mountain runners who can cope with snow. For the less fit and the young, there is the Mürren Fun Triathlon.

The perfect setting for this increasingly popular sport.

And ... Swiss National Day (00 41 41 397 1128), 1 August

The Swiss involve everyone in celebrating their National Day - visiting children are often given a candle lantern to carry in a parade, and every community, and often each hotel, hosts a firework display.
