What police in Notts will be looking out for during first weekend of freedom

Police are ready to deal with reports of large gatherings of people this weekend as the weather improves and lockdown measures are loosened.

This weekend is the first where people are given the freedom to stay outdoors as long as they like and mix with one other person from a different household at two metres apart.

So far, around 120 people have broken the lockdown rules, mostly young men between 18 to 30, who have met up with friends from different households.

The police fines have been extended from £60 to £100, reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.

Repeat offenders could see the fine double for each subsequent breach to a maximum of £3,200.

Nottinghamshire Police have said fines are always a last resort and are calling on the public to use common sense when going out this weekend.

Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police, Craig Guildford, said: "This is the first weekend with the new advice and guidance.

"We are looking at the weather forecast and it is going to be quite a pleasant weekend. I want to advise people around social distancing.

"We continue to work really hard together and we cannot afford to lose all the gains we have made so far.

"We are not in the business of policing supermarket queues or DIY stores.

"However, we are keen to respond to any reports of large gatherings of people who are not observing the advice that we all need to adhere to.

"I think we will probably experience more reports of public or private gatherings of groups of people who are not from the same households.

"That will be our bread and butter over the weekend."

Assistant chief constable Steve Cooper said police officers will also be checking vehicles.

He said: "If we see five adults in a car, we will be finding out where they are going and what they are doing?

"If there are two adults and two children we will let them get on their way. It is common sense policing."
