What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants from Manchester United transfer targets

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants players who reflect his values to join his Manchester United revolution this summer, rather than footballers driven by money.

The Norwegian accepts it's becoming harder for United to attract players to the club in an era when the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City are being so heavily funded by investments from the Middle East.

United's slump down the Premier League table has also arguably made them less attractive as well, but Solskjaer is determined to restore the glory days to Old Trafford.

He won't do that by shelling out huge sums on wages however, which suggests an end to the days of signings such as Alexis Sanchez 15 months ago, with the Chilean on close to £400,000 a week as United fought to beat City to his signature.

Instead Solskjaer will focus on bringing in the right personalities to the club rather than players driven by financial rewards or celebrity status.

"That is not the right type of player we want anyway, if they are only coming because they were offered 20 per cent more," the United boss said.

"We want the player with the right quality and the right personality. All my life I always believed in human beings and what drives people what makes you successful in the end.

"Driven by money or fame they are not right for Man Utd - or my team. Same in Molde, Cardiff and here. I need players who reflect me as a person and my values."

Solskjaer has previously described the job he has on at United as a "rebuild" and he knows it will take more than one transfer window to restore the club to Premier League title challengers.

But he said he'd been told by the owners that he will have their financial backing this summer as he looks to put his own stamp on the squad.

"You can not say that we haven’t invested enough money because if you look at the money that has been invested, they have invested loads of money," Solskjaer said of the Glazers.

"I have been in meetings, we have had discussions of course, we have got a timeframe and we have got the backing but it’s not going to happen overnight, that was what I was saying. You can not change ten in one window.

"We are all realistic enough to see where we are at and you don’t just, bang like this, go from 70 (points) to 90. Liverpool didn’t, City didn’t. They got to where they are now by stability, consistency and steady investment."

Why Manchester United fans shouldn’t be worried about David de Gea’s poor form

That rebuild could suffer some damage before it has begun with uncertainty over the future of David De Gea and Paul Pogba. De Gea is yet to sign an extension to a contract which expires next summer, while Real Madrid have been linked with an interest in Pogba, who is also yet to sign a new deal and will have just two years remaining on his contract this summer.

Solskjaer insists the threat of losing two of his best players won't have an impact on any potential new arrivals.

"I don't pay much attention to what is in the media and I don't think players pay attention to what are rumours," he said. "Players are clever enough to see what we are doing."
