What Manchester United manager Solskjaer told Daniel James before debut vs Chelsea

Manchester United Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lauded Daniel James as a model professional following his goalscoring debut against Chelsea.

James replaced Andreas Pereira in the 74th minute and made it 4-0 with a deflected strike in the 81st minute to crown a perfect Premier League opener for United.

The 21-year-old became Solskjaer's first signing as United manager in a £15million deal from Swansea but endured a difficult summer following the death of his father, Kevan.

James, who netted the winning spotkick in United's friendly win over Cardiff earlier this month, dedicated his first Premier League goal to his father and Solskjaer was thrilled for the Welshman.

"Suddenly you become a good player, don't you?" Solskjaer joked. "No, it's hard work and dedication and the boy is exactly what you want from a professional.

"He's got skills, he's got pace, an X factor, he's had his ups and downs and he's worked really hard and so pleased for him. It's been a summer of very much ups and downs as we all know and to score in front of the Stretford End must be a proud moment for him."

Solskjaer used James on the left and right wing in pre-season and the Wales international scored from the right-hand side. James came on with United 3-0 up and received some simple advice from his manager as he waited to come on.

James told the BBC: "I’'ve dreamt of that. Ole said to be ready to come on. He said to go and enjoy yourself.

"Everything we have been doing in pre-season we have done today; high press and winning the ball back. We were keeping it well, even at 3-0 and 4-0. It sets us up well going in to next week."
