Former Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has opened up on his relationship with former boss Jose Mourinho prior to his January departure to Everton in January 2017.
The Frenchman was a key player under Louis van Gaal's leadership making 29 appearances during his debut season at Old Trafford following a £25million switch from Southampton.
However, following the arrival of Mourinho in the summer of 2016, Schneiderlin's role was swiftly reduced and the midfielder was eventually forced to leave after making just three league appearances under the Portuguese.
The 29-year-old revealed that a lack of pre-season training due to participation in the EURO 2016 tournament may have cost him a place in Mourinho's plans.
"I had a week before the season started so I didn't have a proper pre-season," he told Sky Sports.
"Mourinho said to me he likes me as a footballer but he knows some players in my position more because he had a pre-season with them.
"I was a bit too impatient when I wanted to leave."
Schneiderlin eventually signed for Everton after falling out of favour but revealed his regret at not waiting for a chance at Old Trafford.
The midfielder highlighted Ander Herrera as a prime example who eventually developed into an important first-team player.
He said: "Maybe I should have said to myself, keep working and it will come.
"For example, Ander Herrera, under van Gaal he doesn't play for four months, but he kept passionate and he played under Mourinho.
"Then he gets his move to Paris-Saint Germain so sometimes in football you need to keep passion."
