What Jordan Henderson told Dominic Calvert-Lewin before England penalty controversy

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has admitted he has to be 'more ruthless' after allowing Jordan Henderson to take a missed penalty for England in their final EURO2020 warm-up game against Romania on Sunday.

England were leading 1-0 after captain Marcus Rashford opened the scoring from the spot but both he and second-choice taker James Ward-Prowse had been substituted when the Three Lions were awarded another when Calvert-Lewin was fouled.

Henderson appeared to overrule the Everton striker to take the ensuing penalty but his effort was saved by Romania goalkeeper Florin Nita.

Calvert-Lewin explained the Liverpool captain asked to take the kick and the 24-year-old allowed him the opportunity in an attempt to build his confidence before heading into EURO2020.

Calvert-Lewin said: "[Henderson] said that he'd not scored for England yet so he wanted the penalty.

"Maybe in hindsight I should have took it but on another day he puts it in the back of the net.

"It's just one of those things. Maybe if I want to go to the next level I have to be more ruthless there and take the penalty.

"I think he wanted to take it to gain some confidence going into the tournament and for me I want everyone fully firing and confident.

"I'm confident from the spot and I've took a penalty before but he wanted it and I give it to him."

Calvert-Lewin also revealed he was 'disappointed' to see Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti depart the club for Real Madrid last week.

He continued: "I was very surprised. I found out like everyone else in the morning and by the evening he had gone.

"I can't do nothing else but thank him for what he has done for me at the club.

"I'm disappointed to see him go but I'm sure the club will look to replace him as quickly as possible to get the ball rolling."
