What is a ‘pollen bomb’ – and will my hay fever symptoms worsen this week?

  • A nationwide “ pollen bomb” is predicted across the UK as a result of the erratic weather.
  • The Met Office has warned of increasing pollen levels over the coming week, with grass pollen dominating in Yorkshire, the Midlands, and the northwest. Meanwhile, parts of southern and eastern England are expected to experience the highest levels of pollen, likely remaining elevated throughout the week in the south east and London.
  • Hay fever sufferers are expected to face a difficult week, with visits to the NHS advice page more than doubling in the last few days.
  • Alastair Culham, a professor of botany at the University of Reading, said: “The combination of the fairly breezy and dry weather is going to bring a lot of pollen into the air this week and for the coming weeks.”
  • The term “pollen bomb” is used to describe the process when trees “release millions of grains of pollen in a short time”, according to Claritin .
