What is Fimbu? DR Congo’s viral World Cup celebration and the meaning behind it

• DR Congo ’s players have performed their traditional Fimbu celebration after scoring at this summer’s World Cup – a dance which involves a whipping motion.
• Fimbu means 'the whip' in Lingala, Congo’s most widely-spoken language. Originally, it referred to a lanyard whip used by Congo’s Belgian colonisers for corporal punishment.
• These says, it is more of a playful, rallying cry, stemming from a 2015 song by Felix Wazeka, Leopards Fimbu na Fimbu .
• The dance was seen when Congo scored their opening goal of the tournament, after Yoane Wissa equalised against Portugal .
• In a viral clip, Zlatan Ibrahimovic performed the dance during his punditry work with Fox Sports, inviting fellow stars Thierry Henry and Alexi Lalas to join him.
