What is a PBGV? 3 facts about the Westminster Best in Show 2023 winning dog breed

A PBGV made history on Tuesday night.

Buddy Holly, which is known as a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, won the first-ever Best in Show at the Westminster Dog Show for the breed that came out of the Hound Group in 2023.

If you’re a dog fanatic, maybe you heard of the breed that will probably get a lot more attention after the win at Westminster. But if you haven’t? That’s what we’re here to go over with some fun facts about the canine.

So let’s dive in and learn all about the PBGV after Buddy Holly took home the prestigious title:

How to pronounce the name

Here you go:

What does the name mean?

From the American Kennel Club:

A loose translation of the name describes the dog well: Petit (small), Basset (low), Griffon (shaggy), Vendéen (from the Vendée region of France). Put it all together and you have a diminutive hound, standing 13 to 15 inches at the shoulder, with short but strong legs and a rough tousled coat, bred to hunt rabbits on the rugged west coast of France. Other distinctive features of these little extroverts are a proudly carried head, a saber tail, and a loud, houndy bark.

They have a great nickname

Also per the AKC:

Another one of the PBGV’s adorable nicknames is “the happy breed.” These dogs are known for being incredibly happy. They enjoy human and canine company, love to work, and always stay in good spirits.
