What happens if deadly coronavirus reaches Liverpool

Measures are in place in case the deadly new coronavirus that has killed 81 people in China reaches Liverpool.

Almost 3,000 people have so-far been confirmed as being ill with the virus.

Several Chinese cities have imposed significant travel restrictions to try and halt the spread of coronavirus.

Wuhan in Hubei, the source of the outbreak, is in lockdown.

There have so far been no deaths outside of China, but at least 73 people have been tested for the virus here in the UK.

There have been no confirmed cases in the UK so far, and Public Health England(PHE) says the risk remains low.

Nonetheless, cities like Liverpool are preparing and making sure appropriate measures are in place in case there are any local cases.

Liverpool Council's cabinet member for health outlined what processes are in place in the city after being asked by fellow councillor Joe Dunne.

He said: "There are measures with Public Health England who co-ordinate these responses.

"It’s too early to tell quite how serious this infection might be (you will recall SARS, MERS and other infections with a similar cross over from animals to humans – they occur periodically)."

He added that there are isolation facilities in the city for anyone thought to possibly have the virus.

Cllr Brant wrote: "There is a very good and quick test, so anyone believed to be at risk of exposure and exhibiting the symptoms would be quickly tested and there are isolation facilities where care can be properly provided, and risk on onward infection minimised and a highly developed tracing service.

"Essentially in a highly connected world, it isn’t possible to eliminate all risk, but we are as well prepared as possible in the UK.

"The main aim is to maximise public confidence in the health system, and to get and maintain the confidence and co-operation of the wider public. That enables the best chance to dealing with the incidence."
