What happens if Australia win the Eurovision Song Contest 2019?

After the success of Netta Barzilai in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest this year's competition is taking place in Israel.

The host nation is among the 26 countries taking part in the final - including Austrailia.

Australia is not in Europe, or even particularly close, but has taken part in Eurovision since 2015 as the country's host TV broadcaster SBS is part of the European Broadcasting Union

But what happens if Australia actually win the thing on Saturday? Do all the other countries have to fly half way across the planet next year to take part in a European singing contest in Australasia?

No.

Despite this being Australia's fifth entry in the Eurovision they cannot host the final even if they win. The European Broadcasting Union had confirmed that in accordance with the rules, Australia would not host the event in the southern hemisphere, and instead would co-host the contest within a country in the EBU.

Further to the EBU’s statement, it was confirmed that Germany and their broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) would be the first choice, and the UK and the BBC being the back-up hosts should Germany decline.
