What happened to Stephen Lawrence's killers David Norris and Gary Dobson

The events following Stephen Lawrence's murder are set to be explored in a new ITV drama called Stephen.

Stephen is set 13 years after Stephen Lawrence, 18, was killed in a racially motivated attack as he waited at a bus stop in Eltham, south-east London.

The drama follow's his family's fight for justice and the determination of DCI Clive Driscoll to bring Stephen's murderers Gary Dobson and David Norris to justice.

Days after Stephen's murder on 22 April 1993 several people came forward and named a local gang in connection with the crime.

Five members of the gang were arrested by police, but the charges against all the men were dropped.

Stephen's parents Doreen and Neville launched a private prosecution against three of the men in 1994, but in 1996 the trial collapsed.

In 1997, four years after Stephen's death, all five men appeared at the inquest, but refused to answer questions.

In July of 1997 a public enquiry was announced to look into the killing and subsequent police investigation.

The 'MacPherson report' was released in 1999 and accused the Metropolitan Police of institutional racism and made 70 recommendations, many aimed at improving police attitudes to racism.

The report also recommended the "double jeopardy" law, which stopped defendants being tried again on the same charges, should be scrapped. The law was abolished in 2005.

This law change meant Gary Dobson and David Norris could be charged again over Stephen's death, following the discovery of new forensic evidence.

The new evidence included a blood spot being found on Dobson's jacket and hairs being found in Norris' bedroom both of which were identified as Stephen's.

Their trial began at the Old Bailey in November 2011, and after six weeks in court Dobson and Norris were found guilty of murder in January 2012, both receiving life sentences. Dobson will have to serve a minimum of 15 years and two months, while Norris will serve 14 years and three months.

Speaking outside court, Stephen Lawrence's mother Doreen said the minimum terms imposed "may be quite low" but she recognised "the judge's hands were tied" and thanked him for his sentencing remarks which acknowledged the stress the family had suffered for 18 years.

Dobson is currently serving his life sentence at Gartree Prison. He was 17 at the time of the murder of Stephen. Before his eventual incarceration for murder, he was locked up for five years in 2010 for possessing and supplying class B drugs, which had a street value of around £350,000.

Norris was 16 at the time of murdering Stephen and is currently locked up in Belmarsh prison, a category-A men’s prison. He was allegedly attacked by other prisoners in July 2017.

*Stephen airs on ITV1 at 9pm on Monday
