What happened to Hakim Ziyech on his first Ajax outing since confirmed £33.4m Chelsea transfer

Chelsea made the headlines this week after agreeing a deal to sign Hakim Ziyech in the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old will officially join up with his new teammates at Stamford Bridge on July 1, 2020 after the Blues agreed a £33.4m deal with Ajax, which could rise to a maximum of €44m (£36.7m).

But for the remainder of the season, Ziyech is an Ajax player as he looks to win another league title as well as denying Arsenal and Manchester United in the Europa League before reporting for pre-season training at Cobham.

Frank Lampard believes Ziyech can have a big imprint on Premier League

And for the very first time since his move to Chelsea was confirmed, Ziyech started for Ajax in their Eredivisie clash against RKC Waalwijk on Sunday afternoon.

It turned out to be a routine 3-0 win for last season's Champions League semi-finalists thanks to goals from Dusan Tadic, Lassine Traore and Klass-Jan Huntelaar.

However, Ziyech was only on the pitch for one of those goals.

This is because he was was substituted at half-time.

It's not clear as to if the reason for Ziyech's withdrawal was injury related.

But given he has only just returned to action following the spell on the treatment table, it would appear that he's just being eased back to full fitness which is good news for his new club.

Unsurprisingly, Blues head coach Frank Lampard is delighted that a player of Ziyech's quality will be part of his squad from next season and hinted at where he plans to use the attacking midfielder.

"I know his qualities," he told Chelseafc.com. "He's a player we hope can bring creativity.

"He first came to my attention watching him play in Ajax's Champions League run last year and I thought he was one of their standout players, particularly in the games against Tottenham.

"This season, we've come up against him twice so I know a lot about him. He has a great left foot, plays generally off the right-hand side but can play in behind the frontman as well.

"When you look at us this season, there have been games where we've maybe struggled to unlock the door and he's certainly a player who we hope can bring that bit of creativity.

"He will be something different for us so we're excited. I know he's not coming in now but I think it's exciting for us as a club and for the fans to know that he'll be here next year."
