What happened to AJ on Strictly? Injury explained as her and Kai miss out on final

So in an unfortunate turn of events, there are now just two rather than three couples in the Strictly Come Dancing final.

Last weekend’s semi saw AJ and Kai bounce back from the heartbreak of landing in the bottom two for the first time.

After beating Dan and Nadiya they went from bottom to joint top of the leaderboard after getting their first perfect 40.

However, the highs of last Saturday quickly turned to a huge low for AJ and Kai when she got injured in training earlier this week.

Revealing what happened to It Takes Two host Janette Manrara, AJ said: "I don’t know when it happened, but essentially I’ve got issues with my joint.

"I’ve suffered some traumatic injury to my ligaments. There’s a lot of inflammation.

And despite telling fans she was determined to make the final, on Friday afternoon, Strictly confirmed that she and Kai would be taking no fort her part in the competition.

"I've injected local anaesthetic directly into my foot, I've been strapped up to an ice compression machine for days.

"I've done all I can possibly do to get back on my feet for the Strictly final, I even asked docs if I could perform in my medical moonboot!

"But the fact is I can't even stand on my feet let alone dance, because I've torn my spring ligament."
