What happened in Manchester United vs Everton behind-closed-doors friendly

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Everton in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Carrington on Wednesday.

Erik ten Hag's side continued to step up their preparations for the return of the domestic season by facing the Toffees in sub-zero temperatures at the training ground.

United lost to Cadiz CF and Real Betis during a training camp in Jerez last week, but they drew against Frank Lampard's side, who played friendlies in Sydney last month.

Neither club is releasing details about the game, with the agreement that it would be played behind closed doors and without even club TV crews in attendance.

United Under-21s lost to Bolton in the Papa Johns Trophy on Tuesday night, but defender Rhys Bennett and midfielder Kobbie Mainoo weren't involved at the University of Bolton Stadium, which suggests they might have played against Everton.

Bennett and Mainoo were both part of the squad that travelled to Spain, with the defender coming off the bench against Betis and Mainoo featuring in both fixtures.

United returned to training at Carrington this week, with Christian Eriksen and Facundo Pellistri strengthening the group after Denmark and Uruguay were eliminated from the World Cup at the group stage. The nine United players who lost in the World Cup quarter-finals aren't due back in training until next week.

Ten Hag's side resume their season next Wednesday (December 21), when they face Burnley at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup fourth round. Their Premier League campaign gets back underway when they host Nottingham Forest on December 27.
