What Emiliano Martinez did to Bernd Leno on his first return to Arsenal since £20m transfer

Emiliano Martinez enjoyed the perfect return to Arsenal on Sunday night.

After a decade in north London which included numerous loan spells away, the 28-year-old left the Gunners on a permanent basis as he joined Aston Villa in a deal that could be worth £20m during the summer transfer window.

Since joining Villa, the Argentine has been an ever-present under head coach Dean Smith in the league and was handed a start against his former club in the final game before the international break.

It was the first time Martinez had faced Arsenal and it turned out to be a memorable one.

Not only did he keep a clean sheet against the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, and Willian, but he was on the winning side.

An Ollie Watkins second-half brace added to Bukayo Saka's own goal and ensured Villa shocked Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium by picking up all three points in a 3-0 victory.

In truth, Martinez was rarely called into action as he came out on top in the head-to-head battle with Bernd Leno.

But ahead of kick-off in north London, there was a special moment between the two goalkeepers, as spotted by Goal.

Leno came out for his warm-up about 30 seconds after Martinez and immediately shouted "Emi".

To which the Argentine responded by giving his former team-mate a wave.

Mikel Arteta spoke about Martinez ahead of the game and admitted it wasn't in his plans to sell the keeper.

"He had a career of 10 years here. It wasn't just the last six or eight months," Arteta said in his pre-match press conference. "You have to look at everything he did through his time at the club.

"Obviously, it wasn't in my plans to sell him, but we gave him the chance because he deserved it. He performed really really well but we have to balance the books."
