What Danny Drinkwater's Aston Villa row means for Chelsea midfielder's future

Danny Drinkwater's loan move to Aston Villa could be cut short after he reportedly had a training ground row with Jota.

The Chelsea midfielder was said to have headbutted the Spaniard following a disagreement at Bodymoor Heath, leaving the 30-year-old's future in serious doubt.

Drinkwater joined Villa in early January following a troubled spell at Burnley, where he sustained a serious ankle injury outside a nightclub in September and made just one Premier League appearance for Sean Dyche's team.

He briefly returned to Chelsea before being sent to the struggling midlands side until the end of the campaign.

Drinkwater has made four appearances for Villa but lacked sharpness and has featured just once in the past six weeks.

He was not part of the squad that was trounced by his former club Leicester City on Monday night.

Drinkwater, who is out of contract in the summer, had featured for Frank Lampard in pre-season but a loan move was inevitable from early on as he quickly fell down the pecking order.

Having played sporadically under Antonio Conte, the former England international was jettisoned from the first-team plans by Maurizio Sarri and has failed to fully recover from that setback.

The terms of the loan deal means that Villa will still have to foot the bill.

He will likely receive a hefty fine following an internal investigation and despite the costs, Dean Smith may decide it is better to cut Drinkwater loose than carry a risk of further issues as they try to remain in the Premier League.

Villa face Chelsea on Saturday evening, a game in which the midfielder had already been ruled out owing to the terms of his deal.
