Wetherspoons drinkers stunned over £6,000 food bill for city homeless

Drinkers at a city centre Wetherspoon pub were stunned after a staggering £6,000 worth of food was bought for the city's homeless community in just two hours.

The remarkable event took place in the city last night, with as many as 400 homeless people thought to have been fed with Wetherspoon's pizzas and other food.

It was organised by a movement called 'Wetherspoons The Game' - which arranges monthly events aimed at feeding homeless people using the pub's mobile phone app.

Run through social media, the game sees a group of people visit Wetherspoon pubs in towns and cities around the country and share their table number on social media.

This then allows kind-hearted people to order food using the app to arrive at the group's table, from wherever they are in the country.

Working with local charities and organisations the food is then boxed up and distributed to homeless people in the local area.

Last night, one of the event teams visited The Richard John Blackler Wetherspoon pub in central Liverpool - and things got wild.

Organiser Chris Illman explained: "It was absolutely amazing, we couldn't cope with the amount of food being sent over to our table.

"The bleeper in the pub that goes off every time a food order arrives was annoying everyone in the pub because it was going off all the time."

In remarkable scenes, the game saw more than £6,000 of food ordered to the team's table in just two hours.

This was then collected and distributed to the around 400 of the most needy in the city by various organisations, hostels and charities - including the Cotton Street Project and Street Angels Liverpool.

Chris added: "The staff were brilliant and they were prepared for us, but they were still very stressed because of the sheer volume of food being ordered to our table - it was just brilliant.

"At one point we crashed the screen in the pub that shows orders - it just couldn't cope.

"We were really grateful to all the charities, hostels and organisations that then helped us to deliver the food to the homeless in the city, everyone was buzzing."

Chris added: "We mainly asked people to order pizzas, they are the best thing as people can eat them hot and cold and they are really nice."

Chris, who is from Portsmouth, said he wasn't surprised at the generosity of Scousers, adding: "We knew we would have a good night in Liverpool - it was brilliant."
