'Westworld,' 'Atlanta' and Issa Rae among TV newcomers recognized by Golden Globes

With the benefit of being the first awards show eligible to draw from the new fall season, the Golden Globes again looked to some newcomers for its nominees in the television category.

As expected, "Atlanta" followed up an acclaimed first season by landing among the nominees for musical or comedy series, and the drama series field includes four new faces competing against HBO's "Game of Thrones." They are "The Crown," "Westworld," "This Is Us" and "Stranger Things," which became a pop cultural phenomenon after its debut this summer.

In the acting categories, the nominations grew even more broad. Billy Bob Thornton was recognized for his work in the Amazon series "Goliath," and newcomers in the actress field for TV drama included Claire Foy of "The Crown," Evan Rachel Wood for "Westworld" and Winona Ryder for "Stranger Things."

In the TV comedy field, two new series from HBO were recognized in the actress category: "Insecure" creator and star Issa Rae and Sarah Jessica Parker for "Divorce." The actor field included a nomination for "Atlanta" star and creator Donald Glover alongside a surprise nod for Nick Nolte for the Epix series "Graves."

The supporting acting categories also looked to some of television's new faces. Thandie Newton of "Westworld" was nominated for supporting actress along with two performers from the NBC drama "This Is Us," Chrissy Metz and Mandy Moore. And John Lithgow joined the field for best supporting actor for his performance in the Netflix series "The Crown."
