A clinical first-half double from Noah Botic has helped Western United snatch an upset A-League Men win on the road at Newcastle.
Botic's two goals - from his side's only two first-half shots - and a header after the break from Tongo Doumbia allowed United to climb out of last place on the ladder.
They had clung on for their lives in the first half, needing a string of saves from Jamie Young to keep them in front after Beka Mikeltadze gave the Jets a 33rd-minute lifeline from the spot.
But they took over late and sealed their first win in five games, at the same time ending the Jets' six-game unbeaten run and costing them an opportunity to jump into the top six.
Botic was on the spot inside three minutes, ducking in front of his man to meet Josh Risdon's inch-perfect cross and nod home past Newcastle keeper Jack Duncan.
After surviving a barrage - including a beautiful curling effort from Jets midfielder Kosta Grozos that Young had to dive to get to - Botic was again in the perfect spot to tap home winger Connor Pain's driven pass.
Mikeltadze finally got the Jets on the board, easily tucking home his penalty after a Jacob Tratt handball gifted Newcastle a lifeline.
But just as the Jets looked like they might grab an equaliser, Doumbia put things to bed with a back-post header that was his first goal for the club.
Newcastle looked particularly brittle at the back throughout and were almost caught out a number of times by careless passing, one back-pass missed by Jack Duncan rolling narrowly wide of the goal.
While they had been on the back foot in the first half, Western upped the ante in the second and could have found even more goals, gilt-edged chances for substitute Michael Ruhs and Botic going to waste.
Newcastle could have gone fourth with the win but instead remain seventh, although they were not overly punished in the race for finals thanks to sixth-placed Sydney's loss to Melbourne City.
