West Lothian primary school win first prize in prestigious national competition

A West Lothian primary school’s quiz team showed it was top of the class recently.

The pupils from St Joseph’s Primary in Linlithgow achieved a first place finish in the Scotland-wide Euroquiz.

Team members Eric, Beatrix, Connell, Anna (with Finlay as reserve) demonstrated an impressive level of knowledge about European languages, history, geography, culture and European affairs to finish one point ahead of; Strathblane Primary School in Stirling (2nd place) and six points ahead George Watson’s College Junior School in Edinburgh (3rd place).

Euroquiz is run by the Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET). It sees teams of four working together to broaden their knowledge of Europe and the wider world.

Over 440 schools, involving over 2200 pupils from across Scotland took part in Euroquiz Heats earlier this year, with the St Joseph’s Primary Linlithgow team; Eric, Beatrix, Connell, and Anna winning the West Lothian heat in May to secure their place in the online finals.

Ann Smith, head teacher of St Joseph’s Linlithgow, said: “We are all extremely proud of the team and their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm.

“They demonstrated our school values throughout and showed that hard work and commitment pays dividends.

“The pupils used TEAMS really effectively throughout their preparation to share their learning together showcasing the agile learners that they are becoming.

“As well as fantastic support from their P6 class teacher, Mrs Susan McLean, our parental support in preparation for the final has also been phenomenal.

“The team faced some very challenging questions including: Which countries border Austria?, Name three Slavic speaking nations? and In which European country is Lake Ladoga located?

“This is a fantastic achievement for the team and for St Joseph’s Primary School.

“It was very impressive to win the West Lothian heat against strong competition, and to go on to win the Scotland-wide event is a superb accomplishment.”
