West Ham should dump Marko Arnautovic in the reserves to stew, claims club legend

West Ham legend Frank McAvennie says the club should make Marko Arnautovic stew in the reserves, rather than allow him to move to China.

The Austria international is trying to engineer a move away from the Hammers for the second time in as many transfer windows, having handed in another transfer request.

The 30-year-old was close to leaving London in January, but was instead handed a contract extension which was announced shortly after an FA Cup defeat at AFC Wimbledon.

Arnautovic is now keen again to depart West Ham and is understood to have completed a medical with Shanghai SIPG ahead of a £20m move.

But should that deal fall through, McAvennie told Love Sport Radio that the 30-year-old should be banished to the reserves as punishment for his behaviour.

"The first time he wanted to go, I wanted him out the door because as an ex-player you hear stories and apparently he is not good for the dressing room," said the ex-Hammers star.

"Now it’s come up a second time, the boys will just be fed up with him I would imagine.

"The quicker he goes, the better. I would love West Ham to put him in the reserves and just let him sit there and stew. But it’s not going to happen.

"It’s a business and Mr Sullivan and Mr Gold will be wanting to reap some money in for him. I think in the next week or so they will be trying to offload him."

Arnautovic moved to West Ham from Stoke in the summer of 2017 for a fee of £30m and overcome a tough start to become a fans' favourite.

However, supporters began to turn on the Austrian after his efforts to force a move away in January and his latest antics are unlikely to have helped his cause among the Hammers faithful.
