West Brom manager latest as Baggies line up move for boss of Championship rivals

West Brom have told caretaker James Shan he will remain in charge against Preston this weekend but they are considering a move for North End's Alex Neil.

Albion had told Shan to expect to remain at the helm for the rest of the season as he won his first three games after Darren Moore's sacking.

But back-to-back away Championship defeats in four days have prompted a rethink.

Chinese-owned Albion are desperate to bounce back to the Premier League immediately after relegation.

Caretaker Shan has accepted the Albion board may now want to bring in someone new after Saturday's visit by Preston.

They are virtually assured of the play-offs but are considering a potential new manager to get them up.

Preston boss Neil, 37, already has a Championship promotion on his CV after guiding former club Norwich via the play-offs at Wembley in 2015.

Neil has seen his own side's hopes of the play-offs wrecked by three successive defeats ahead of Saturday's trip to the Hawthorns.

West Brom lost away to play-off rivals Bristol City on Tuesday, four days after a defeat on the road against Millwall.

Preston, meanwhile, have dropped out of the play-off picture after defeats to Leeds, Sheffield United and Reading.

Championship Albion provoked uproar when they sacked Darren Moore last month despite being fourth.

Shan guided West Brom to successive victories over Swansea, Brentford and Birmingham City, with the Baggies keeping clean sheets in his first two games in charge.

Former Fulham and Watford boss Slavisa Jokanovic was the previous favourite for the West Brom job after two prior promotions.
